Portugal Advances with Dramatic Shootout Victory Against Slovenia

July 1, 2024

LJUBLIJANA, Slovenia – In a match that tested the nerves of both players and fans, Portugal secured their place in the knockout stages of the European Championship with a thrilling 3-0 penalty shootout victory over Slovenia, following a grueling 0-0 draw through 120 minutes of play at Arena Stožice.

From the first whistle, it was clear this was going to be a fiercely contested match. Portugal, led by their legendary captain Cristiano Ronaldo, applied early pressure. Ronaldo's attacking prowess and the creative playmaking of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva kept the Slovenian defense on high alert. Despite numerous attempts on goal, Portugal was repeatedly denied by Slovenia’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak, whose heroics kept the scoreline intact.

Ronaldo addressed the media regarding his status with playing in the European Championship by stating, "“It is, without doubt, my last European Championship...” .

Slovenia, not to be outdone, mounted their own offensive efforts. Striker Andraž Šporar and midfielder Jasmin Kurtić tested the Portuguese defense, which was anchored by the experienced Pepe and the solid Ruben Dias. Diogo Costa, Portugal’s goalkeeper, was also called into action several times, making crucial saves to keep his team in the game.

As the match wore on, the intensity only grew.

The second half mirrored the first, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the back of the net.

The match entered extra time with the deadlock still unbroken. Extra time saw more of the same: relentless attacking, sturdy defending, and outstanding goalkeeping from both sides. Portugal continued to push for a decisive goal, with Rafael Leão and João Félix coming close on several occasions, but the Slovenian defense held firm.

With neither team able to score after 120 minutes, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.

Portugal displayed remarkable composure and precision from the spot. Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and João Félix stepped up confidently to convert their penalties, to finish with a final of 3-0 in the penalty shootout . Meanwhile, Diogo Costa emerged as the hero for Portugal, saving three consecutive penalties from Slovenia’s shooters, including attempts by Miha Zajc and Benjamin Verbič.

After the match, a reflective Cristiano Ronaldo addressed the media. “It is, without doubt, my last European Championship,” he said. “But I’m not emotional about that. I’m moved by all that football means — by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm for seeing my supporters, my family, the affection people have for me.”

This hard-fought victory underscores Portugal's resilience and determination as they advance to the knockout stages to face France in the quarterfinal of the European Championship on Friday, July 5 at 3:00 p.m.
